Geosynthetics

Geosynthetics (GSY) is the generic term for a product, at least one of whose constituents is based on a synthetic or natural polymer, in the form of a sheet, strip or three-dimensional structure, used in contact with the ground and/or other materials in the fields of geotechnics and civil engineering.

Although the raw material used in the manufacture of geosynthetic materials is still mainly derived from the transformation of hydrocarbons, geosynthetic professionals have undertaken scientific research to allow substitution by natural or recycled fibres. Geosynthetics can be classified into three main families: geotextiles and related products, geomembranes, and bentonite geosynthetics. Geotextiles and related products perform drainage, filtration, protection, reinforcement, separation and surface erosion control functions. Bentonite geomembranes and geosynthetics, on the other hand, perform the sealing function exclusively. Products resulting from the industrial combination of two or more geosynthetics are called geocomposites. They then fulfil several functions in structures (e.g. TEXGRID carbon fibre geogrids provide structural reinforcement and anti-cracking function).
